Kaul Reunion Trivia Question
Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Mountain Bike Adventures
Eliza's husband Ryan is wondering if anyone will be mountain biking in "Mountain Bike Capital USA". The valley has about 600 miles of trails and mountain bike parks at Winter Park and Sol Vista. Rental bikes are available at various locations. We will be arriving Monday or Tuesday Aug. 1st or 2nd and he will be trying to ride as much as possible. Email me at eliza.reuter@gmail.com if you are interested.

Keith and Cindy and two children
Hans Bjorenson and two children
TK and Helen and three children
Peter and Carleen and four children
Vicky and Patrick

(Peter says the total is 23 because Sonia, Helen, and Dave are Ifs)
Any other adventurers are welcome. Let us know soon. E-mail Victoria.phillips@fairfaxcounty.gov
Wear some quick drying clothes or bathing suits because this is going to be a wild and wet adventure (Class 3 and 4 Rapids). Bring a change of clothes. The water on Clear Creek is cold.
DIRECTIONS: From Grand Lake it is 1 ½ hrs. We will be leaving Grand Lake between 12:30 and 1:00 the Afternoon of August 10. Take US hwy 34 to US 40. Travel US 40 east over Berthoud Pass. Take I-70 east toward Denver. Take exit 234 toward Downieville. The office is on the north side just off the exit in the building with Starbucks.
Please go to www.madadventures.com to confirm these directions.
The cost is 42.50 because we have a larger group. Peter has already put down a payment. You can give him a check for your share at the reunion.

Step Up to the Plate! TODAY! !!! We have some Kauls that won’t be able to go to the reunion unless we help them. This is a message to all you Kaul cousins. Some of us have been thinking that a Kaulorado scholarship fund for the reunion should be set up. We have a few cousins who need some financial assistance to get to the reunion this summer. Since generosity is a trait in the Kaul gene pool, how about it? Even a check for 10 dollars would be helpful. Mail your checks to Johanna Warren, 11146 Forest Edge Drive, Reston, Virginia 20190.
Time is of the essence. Do it now.
Those who need financial assistance, e-mail Tom Kaul,tomckaul@gmail.com (confidential)

Greetings from the Northwest Faction!
Here's an update from the Uncle Jim Kaul family. Uncle Jim and his kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren are staying at the Gathering Place and Arts on Grand Lake. It's a 6 cabin compound and we have rented all 6 cabins. Attending will be Uncle Jim, his daughters Caron and her husband ED and a sizable contingency of her brood, Krissy and her boyfriend Dale, son James and his wife Rachelle and their boys Mason (11), and Henry (7). We will be arriving Thursday August 6th and departing Monday August 10th. We plan on attending all the scheduled events and propose adding the following sub-event: there are at least 3 new members to the AARP available club (newly 50) and although all you older siblings have been livin' the dream of 50+ for some time now, we're new to the shock and awe and would like to be properly inducted! I know Peter Warren, Lisa Bjornson and myself, James Kaul are recently in the club and if there are any other half-centurions out there you deserve to be inducted as well. Any ideas on how to mark this momentous occasion?
Kaulorado, here we come...

Places to Stay Near Grand Lake, Kaulorado
Lemmon Lodge (www.lemmonlodge.com)
We reserved 4 cabins (this is a very popular spot and these were the only cabins available right now for our dates). The lodge is on the lake and is great for kids with a private beach and boat slips if anyone wanted to bring or rent a boat. The only down side is that they require a five night minimum. The cabins we got are the small ones; Cabin #5--sleeps 6(see photos on website),Cabin#14-says it sleeps 4, but pretty small, maybe 2 adults and 1 child.(nice location right next to lake and private beach) Cabin #19 and #21, next to each other and sleep 4 per cabin ( by creek). If you are interested in these, you need to let me know so I can put them in your name, instead of mine. They require a deposit in February, but I would like to know before that so I know they are going to be used or I will cancel them. This is a great location and pretty spot. See website for prices.
Rapids Lodge (www.rapidslodge.com)
This is another great spot that will hold lots of people. I believe you have to put a 1 night deposit down at booking. I recommend you do not wait too long as it will book up fast after the 1st of the year. They are open all winter, so easier to get a hold of . Nice places on the river, some more rustic then others. Check out website for details and prices. This one has a 2 night minimum. We especially liked the Riverview Condos 2,5,6(just being built)7 and 8 are available. 3 and 4 are privately owned and I found the website that rents one of them and is attached. The suites look nice, but not on river. The Rapids Condo 5B is updated and nice as well on river. The other Condos are good as well but a little more dated. The lodge rooms and cabins are fine, but very rustic. This place would probably hold almost everyone right now, but I don't know how quickly they will fill up. It also has a nice bar and restaurant.
Sunny Side Cottages (no website, but I looked at them and are very cute log cabins) There is an owner's cabin and 2 other rental cottages. Both I believe sleep 6. Very nice people and located right in between Rapids and Lemmon Lodge.
Grandlake #- 970-431-0363 or Denver # 303-940-7131
Ask for Chuck.
Wildwood Cabins ( no website, but newer log cabins, about 3 or 4, probably sleep 4 to 6 people each). Joe and I have stayed in one of these cabins and they are nice. In village, only a block from others. 970-627-8746
Western Riviera Motel (www.westernriviera.com)
This is a great little motel right on the lake, just down the beach from lemmon lodge. It is right in the action of the village, so probably not as quiet as the others, but great location and nice clean rooms. We chose these because they are all within walking distance of each other. If you are looking for rental homes or want to be in another location let me know.
One other good hotel/ condo place is the Gateway Inn (www.gatewayinn.com) This is at the entrance to town and really close to the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is very modern and nice rooms with bar and restaurant and views of the lake. Joe and I have also stayed here as well and enjoyed it. It isn't walking distance to the others but only a short car drive to the other side of the small village.
Camping
We also checked out a great camping spot for you campers. They are on Lake Granby which is the lake just south of Grandlake and very close to our house. We have a pontoon on this lake, so we will have lots of boat cruises with you! Joe is going to look into when you can reserve these sites. We think it is 6 months out from date. We wrote down the good sites and will also write down the date, so we have the best chance to make these reservations. Please let us know if you want to camp and what days you are looking at.
Finally, we are reserving our place for immediate family(the Great 8). As you know this could be a "big bunch", so kids and young adults will have to camp on our land. Let us know if you want to reserve a room. We can hold 5 couples. We have one room reserved so far. I am sure we will have lots camping on our land, so we will have to keep it to immediate family since we have limited tent and camper spots.

Happy New Year Everyone! Joe and I are looking forward to hosting this exciting event. I have officially reserved the barn for Saturday, August 8. We are thinking of having the picnic on Sunday at the Grand lake beach area as this would be a good location for the majority staying in town. It is a great spot to take in the Lake scene and we can give pontoon tours throughout the day. You can also rent kayaks, canoes, etc. Some may want to brave the frigid water and go swimming or tubing. If you have surf shirts, bring them! For those who are able to arrive Friday, we will be hosting the welcoming party at our house.
We need to know ASAP who wants to commit to a camp site as we will need to reserve these soon. Also, feel free to contact me with any accomodation questions. I would be interested to know where everyone is staying. Please let me know if anyone would like the Lemon lodge cabins as I will need to cancel these soon if no one wants them. It would be great to have someone there so we could have a boat slip in town. The Western Riviera is another great spot right on the boardwalk where the picnic would be. Please let us know any input you have. I will be working on food, activities, etc. and would love your thoughts.
Thanks,
Cathy

Welcome to the Kaulorado 2009 blog! The purpose of this blog, as I see it, is to exchange ideas relating to the reunion in Colorado in August 2009. It could to propose events, suggest travel and accommodations, or exchange stories from the past reunions, and to remember this one after it's over. I believe anyone should be able to post to this blog but in order to do so I have to invite you via email and then you have to set up a google account to log in. You can also request an invitation to post in the comments area. As this is my first attempt at blogging, I might be missing some of the best uses for a blog and as such, please feel free to make suggestions. I will gather all the email addresses I have so far and send invitations to everyone. It will be interesting to see how this works!
Best to everyone
